Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several access tunnels down to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
