Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
