They're Doing to America What They Executed with Christianity

Trumpism's most illuminating and defining moments – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the US president began displaying everyone his designs for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions compared to the White House and then began solo dismantling the eastern section to construct it.

He has done things countless times more severe – the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to foreign assistance is 600,000 and increasing, and recently research predicted his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have dared – truly, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking major areas of the White House to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with federal agencies.

We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the Earth' toward 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'

As confusing as it is to witness the leader attempt to overturn the old idea regarding democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have observed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we learned about into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into an icon of hostility who endorses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened more slowly, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

Hence I shall explain the Christ from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and given that the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense about him since they are skeptics or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of great price within Christian narrative.

It is emphatically not the account of a powerful ruler appearing; conversely, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to another nation to evade undercover officers. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, a laboring woodworker; his teaching is about love for others, particularly for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Christ's response to violence is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a way to instruct the aggressor; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever someone steals your outer garment you must offer him your sweater too.

The apparent and clear truth that the Jesus from scripture requests a type of profound affection concentrated on the needy is what has always made Christianity something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality requiring to be restrained. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestantism was so prevalent that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Struggle for the Finest of Us

Hence I have become encouraged to observe the steadfast resistance against Trump arise during the previous year. It has served as substantial consolation to help build the movement that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to turn out in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, with American flags at every demonstration and appeals to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you welcome them and receive them or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by relationship to the finest within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by relationship to what makes it distinctive and magnificent, specifically the model of Jesus. In all circumstances does it suggest acting as if the worst regarding America and religious tradition never occurred; it represents both humility and conviction, a combination that serious American Christians should be comfortable with.
