A shadow economy for unapproved slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Investigational Drug Acquiring Traction Online
The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Viewers are encouraged to contact these accounts privately for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.
Active Trade on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a flourishing trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share comparison images, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before redirecting customers to other platforms for purchases.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could assist patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Express Worries
Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what is still an unapproved drug in the UK is worrisome and could lead to users administering substances of unknown origin.
Some experts stated the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising cost of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Status and Enforcement
Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be marketed or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some influencers try to circumvent the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and consumer laws, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or prison.
Service Reaction and Material Removal
According to TikTok, the platform has removed problematic material and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to keeping the service safe and investing in strengthening compliance measures.
Online Trading Operations
Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand participants marketing the experimental drug using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of users, filled with photos of weight loss, glowing testimonials and step-by-step instructions for preparing or injecting at residence.
Within moments of joining one group, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The seller sent an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within two days. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a alleged testing documentation. Not one inquired about body mass, health issues or previous experience.
Product Details and Pricing
Inside these communities, messages display dark colored packages with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors typically sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a injector should be used, vendors give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Security Actions
A representative for Telegram said it actively monitored harmful material on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Warnings
“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind this drug is valid, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in interest to recent cost increases for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are using online platforms. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she said.
Her staff has already seen individuals harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a company investigational substance not yet authorized … may subject users to possibly serious health risks”.
